Conserve Dragonflies of Croatia!

"Promotion of Dragonfly Protection in Croatia" is a project of Croatian Odonatological Society - Platycnemis, a public, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 2006., with the goal of protecting and researching dragonfly species and their habitats.

Red List of Croatian Dragonflies, and subsequently laws which protect dragonfly species in Croatia are less then three years old. With odonatology limited to academic institutions, there is general lack of knowledge about endangered Dragonfly species, their habitats and the need to protect them among general public, but also among environmentally orientated NGOs, Nature and National Parks’ managements, even the decision makers and legislative bodies.

This project provides a free online database of dragonfly photographs and information on dragonfly species, and hopes to provide another tool which would aid in the protection of specific localities/habitats, or aid in the presentation of the need to conserve biodiversity.

For more information on croatian odonatology, feel free to contact us at platycnemis@vretenca.hr, or visit the society’s website: www.vretenca.hr.

Project Summary

Black Pennant (Selysiothemis nigra), an endangered species in Croatia, listed Near Threatened in the Red List © 2008. Nino Mihoković

During the course of the project, 49 out of 64 dragonfly species were photographed. The photographs can be obtained for non-commercial use by numerous target groups (environmental NGOs, schools and other educational institutions, nature lovers’ groups (scouts, mountaineers, fishers, hunters, birdwatchers, tourists), national and nature park’s managements, natural history museums and other), hoping to raise awareness on the loss of dragonfly species and populations in Croatia.

The follow-up of the project is planned for 2009., with hope of procuring photographs of missing species. Stay up to date with news on uses of project's output products, and our efforts to conserve dragonfly species, as these Internet pages will continually be updated with new information.
